about the author
Reinhard Kummer, born in 1959, lives and works in Kiel. Through his studies of geography, many years of work in a Globetrotter equipment store and as co-owner of a geographic bookstore, he was able to gather an extensive knowledge of map, compass and GPS. This knowledge was deepened in practice through numerous hiking, canoeing and sailing trips.
Brief description
Many hiking areas today are hopelessly overcrowded because few trekkers venture into pathless terrain. At the same time, the number of lost hikers is steadily increasing. Even experienced hunters and anglers often don't know how to use compass, map and GPS properly.
In this outdoor handbook, Reinhard Kummer teaches both hikers and canoe, car, bicycle and motorcycle riders the basics of these three navigation tools. First, the basics and terms of cartography and the structure of topographic maps are explained. Then methods are presented how to use map, compass and GPS. For practice, some exercises (with solutions) are printed. Useful addresses of geographic bookstores and compass and GPS manufacturers as well as literature tips complete this book.
