Retrofitting air conditioning systems for caravans and motorhomes

A modern caravan or motorhome should now have air conditioning. After all, it is often hot on the campsite during a summer vacation. Here in the online store, you can order retrofit camping air conditioning systems from well-known brands such as Truma, Dometic or Evapolar. When buying your camping air conditioner, make sure that the specified cooling capacity matches the size of your camper.

What camping air conditioners are available?

There are various devices for keeping caravans, motorhomes, camper vans and awnings cool:

The Truma air conditioning system

Air conditioning systems from Truma cool your motorhome or caravan to a comfortable temperature using an app. While you are still on the beach, you can tell your Truma Aventa or Saphir via smartphone how warm or cold you want your caravan or motorhome to be. With the optional iNet system, this is no longer a pipe dream. Together with the Truma CP plus, you can centrally control your Truma heating and Truma air conditioning from one place. The Truma air conditioning systems took first place in the König Kunde Award 2019. Whether the Aventa on the roof or the Saphir in the storage compartment - with a Truma air conditioning system you stay cool.

The Dometic air conditioning system

The Dometic FreshJet and FreshLight air condition ers cool from the roof, while the Dometic FreshWell fits perfectly in the storage compartment. Very small and lightweight air conditioners, equipped with low starting currents and a soft start option - that's what the Dometic air conditioner stands for. This means you can start your Dometic air conditioner even when the power supply at the campsite is weak. The FreshJet air condition ers can be used as a duo in large vehicles. The Dometic FreshLight is a little more expensive, but scores points with its built-in roof window. Whether FreshWell, FreshJet or FreshLight, you can keep a cool head with a Dometic air conditioning system.

How does a roof air conditioner work?

When you install a camping air condition er on the roof, you don't waste any unnecessary space in your caravan or motorhome. However, the models reduce the aerodynamics of the vehicle, which can lead to higher fuel costs. The roof-mounted air conditioning system is usually installed via an existing roof hatch. This is a safe solution, as you cannot saw into any load-bearing parts in the roof. The roof window is removed and the roof-mounted air conditioning system is hooked into the existing cut-out and secured. If not already pre-installed in the vehicle, laying the 230 V power cable up to the roof air conditioner is probably the most strenuous work. If you want to keep your daylight, we recommend the Dometic Freshlight with integrated roof window. The camping air conditioners for the roof without a skylight usually have pleasant, indirect LED lighting.

Retrofitting a storage box air conditioning system

Storage box air conditioning systems: Camping air conditioning systems for caravans and motorhomes that ensure quiet air circulation in the room are particularly popular for retrofitting. As the air conditioning unit fits into the storage box, installation is much easier.
Here is a rough installation guideline:
  • Find a suitable space in the storage box, bed box, etc
  • Provide power
  • Carefully position the enclosed installation template
  • mark all important entrances, exits and fixing points
  • drill the cut-outs marked in the floor
  • Attach the exhaust air grille
  • Seal everything well with Sika 221
  • Fasten the bracket
  • Insert the storage box air conditioning system
  • If necessary, connect to the warm air distribution of the heater
  • Install air intake grille (from the vehicle interior to the air conditioning system)
  • Install ventilation nozzles
  • Connect the cold air hose
The storage compartment air conditioning system draws the warm air from the interior of the camper and cools it. The air is also dried in the air conditioning system (the water exits through the drain pipe mounted in the floor), cleaned and filtered. Please note that every camper is different and that nozzles, intake grilles and cold air pipes may need to be ordered as options for cold air distribution.

Due to the installation in the storage box, the installation of the air conditioning system has a positive effect on the driving characteristics of your caravan.

Air distributor, diffuser

The air distributor ensures even distribution of cold air in caravans and motorhomes. The diffuser is simply attached to the roof air conditioning system and blows the cold air in the desired directions. The air distributor or the ventilation nozzle(s) for the storage box air conditioning system must be installed at the top, as cold air is known to fall. A connection to the warm air distribution of the heating system is common for air conditioning systems with a heating function, such as the Truma Saphir Comfort.

How are camping air conditioners operated?

The cooling system for caravans and motorhomes is usually operated via a remote control, which you can use to set the desired temperature. In addition, you can often choose between cooling, automatic, ventilation, dehumidification or heat pump settings. An air conditioner works with a special refrigerant that has a major impact on energy consumption. The Truma Aventa and Saphir air conditioning systems can be integrated into the Truma iNet system. This means you can operate the Truma air conditioning systems via app and smartphone with the right accessories.

Mobile air conditioning systems for caravans and fans

Not everyone can or wants to afford a camping air conditioner. In this case, we have Evapolar air conditioners in our range. These so-called evaporative air conditioners from Evapolar are filled with cold water and (depending on how cold the water is) cool down their surroundings considerably. The great thing about the mobile Evapolar devices is that you can take them from the awning into the caravan or even into the camping tent with the battery. But the good old fan also provides a pleasant breeze. Whether it's a mobile air conditioner, pedestal fan, column fan or table fan, let a stiff breeze blow around your nose!
