Why is camping with young people a good idea?
Travelling with young people is exhausting? It doesn't have to be. Therefore, the most important thing in advance: Of course, not all young people are the same. You know your teens best and you know which of the following tips work and which do not. But sometimes you just have to try something new. And above all, talk to each other a lot and find compromises.
Camping is especially good for family holidays with young people because:
there is usually a wide range of leisure activities.
there are often opportunities for retreat.
the adolescents find a connection.
teenagers can enjoy many freedoms in a relatively safe environment.
vanity quickly becomes unimportant on the campsite.
spending time in nature simply makes you happy.
Choice of campsite
The potential for disputes can already be reduced with the choice of campsite. Of course, it depends on the personality and preferences of the teenager. But the following points are important for almost all adolescents.
WLAN
Your offspring will probably want to stay in touch with friends during your camping holiday. This should not be a problem, as many campsites now offer free WiFi. Nevertheless, check the website of the place in advance to avoid a big disappointment.
Retreat options
At a certain age, the hormones simply go crazy. It's good if the teenagers can withdraw from time to time. So it's best to choose a place that offers your child the necessary space. Sometimes there are also special youth clubs. There the kids can relax and meet new people. Often these rooms are also equipped with TVs, game consoles and more.
Sanitary rooms with privacy
Some young people need a great deal of privacy. So if you have to rely on the sanitary buildings, make sure they are well-maintained and that your teen can feel comfortable there.
Peers
There are campsites that tend to attract older people or families with younger children. So do a little research beforehand and choose a campsite that offers your child the opportunity to connect with peers.
Leisure Activities
For some young people, adrenaline and action are a must on holiday. If your child feels the same way, choose a place with a wide range of sports and entertainment. You can see examples of this below.
Restaurants
If your teenager has a special diet, such as being a vegetarian, it's worth looking at the menus of local restaurants. If the offer is a little more varied, there is no need to cook all the time and everyone can enjoy the holiday.
Location of the campsite
Be sure to also note the location of the campsite. While it's great if the campsite offers a lot, the surroundings also play a role in avoiding boredom. Cities, the sea or amusement parks are particularly interesting at this age.
Arrival at the campsite
You've agreed on a campsite and now you're ready to go. You will soon realise that „Are we there yet?“ is not a question that only small children ask. To make the journey comfortable, I recommend that you and your teen have the following items close at hand.
Books / eBook-Reader
Your child likes to read? Great, then you've already found the perfect occupation. Maybe you'll even get a new book to browse through for the trip. But beware: If it makes you sick, you'd better switch to other entertainment options.

Audiobook
If reading is not an option, one could switch to an audio book. The beauty of it: The whole family can listen to the story. Therefore, it is better to choose the story together beforehand.
If you want to build anticipation, ask your child to create a holiday playlist. You can listen to it together while driving.
Headphones
If this idea doesn't excite you, you can simply hand your child headphones. It can then dive into its own world.
Tablet / smartphone / mobile game console / DVD player
Nowadays, there are so many electric entertainment options that you can easily bridge a journey to Spain or even further. My tip: Most streaming services offer an offline mode that you can use while driving. So simply select films or series, download them and then watch them offline later. This saves the mobile data volume.
Cushion
A pillow should not be missing, because after a long nap, the child is immediately much more relaxed.
Food
Hunger makes you grumpy. This is an unwritten law and I often have the feeling that with teenagers this circumstance is even more pronounced. Therefore, always take a few treats with you. For example, I like to pack cold pizza. This snack is quick, easy and really tasty.
Tips for the pitch / plot
Camping means living in a confined space. But after a certain age, teenagers don't find that so great anymore. They need privacy. But that's no problem at all, because you can simply get your offspring their own tent. Make sure you have a darkened sleeping cabin, so the kids can sleep longer in the morning if they were out with friends the night before. Find out more about darkened sleeping cabins in tents.
Power connection
Also make sure they have access to the power supply. After all, the electronic gadgets also need to be charged.
Here you can find camping tents in the Berger online shop.
Leisure activities at the campsite
Young people want to enjoy their free time and also slowly become more independent. Allow your child these first freedoms. Because the campsite in particular is a comparatively safe environment that often offers exciting activities. These include (depending on the campsite):
- Water Sports / Swimming
- Climbing
- Skating
- Minigolf
- Kickers
- Bowling
- Relax on the beach / sea
- Beach volleyball
- Cycling
- Explore youth club
- Parties for teenagers
Conclusion: a successful holiday for the whole family
Camping with young people can be really great. Maybe they will meet new friends on site or even experience their first summer love. The key is to find a suitable campsite that is suitable for the whole family. Then camping is fun for old and young.
