The right tent stake depends primarily on the ground type. On grass or normal soil, classic tent stakes are a good choice. For sandy or loose soil, longer and wider stakes are better, as they have a larger surface area in the ground and therefore hold more securely. On hard, stony, or rocky ground, sturdy rock pegs are particularly practical because they’re easier to drive into the ground and don’t bend as easily. This ensures your tent, awning, or sunshade stands more securely, and you’ll be well-prepared for your campsite.

The right material depends on the ground and intended use. Plastic tent stakes are lightweight, rust-resistant, and well-suited for soft to moderately firm ground. Steel tent stakes and rock-ground pegs are particularly sturdy and ideal for hard, stony, or compacted surfaces. Aluminum tent stakes are pleasantly lightweight and therefore practical if you want to save weight while camping. For permanent or heavily loaded guy lines, steel tent stakes are usually the more stable choice.

Specialized stakes, such as T- or V-shaped stakes, sand stakes, or rock-ground pegs, are useful when standard tent stakes don’t provide enough hold in the ground. In sand, loose soil, or strong winds, longer or wider stakes are helpful. On very hard or rocky ground, rock anchors are the better solution. For awnings, canopies, and sunshades, it’s especially important to ensure a stable hold, as there’s often more tension on the anchor points in these cases.

Make sure the tent stakes are firmly secured in the ground and are suitable for the specific type of ground. The guy lines should be taut without putting too much strain on the fabric. In windy conditions, it’s important to use all designated guy points and distribute the force evenly. This keeps your tent stable, ensures the guy lines hold better, and protects the tent fabric, seams, and poles at the same time.
